Friday's roundup: Falcon moves to 7-1 in boys' basketball
Boys’ Basketball
Falcon 61, Pueblo South 53
At Pueblo East: Falcon (7-1) used an 18-9 third-quarter run to overcome a 24-20 halftime deficit and defeat Pueblo South (3-5) in the Pueblo East Tournament.
“We struggled a little bit in the first half, basically offensively with turnovers,” Falcon coach Greg Cox said. “We had to put it together in the second half.”
Chances Matlock led the way with 20 points for the Falcons, who were without post player Daniel Synder (hip flexor).
“Chances Matlock had another big night for us,” Cox said.
Falcon’s Shaun Livecchi added 14 points and Nick Lenhard scored 10.
Fountain-Fort Carson 54, Kennedy 52
At Cherry Creek: Fountain-Fort Carson (6-3) snapped Kennedy’s four-game winning streak with a victory in nonconference action.
Senior Alex Coleman led Kennedy (5-4) with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Reginald Hammons had 13 of the Commanders’ 16 assists. No stats were reported for Fountain-Fort Carson.
Lincoln 50, Doherty 36
At Lincoln: Gabriel Vazquez was 6-of-9 from the field and connected on 9-of-10 free-throw attempts to score 21 points and propel Lincoln (4-3) to victory.
Not only was Vazquez a force on the offensive side of the ball, but the senior also pulled down 12 rebounds.
Doherty fell to 5-4 after falling behind 14-2 in the first quarter of this one. Lincoln only outscored the Spartans 36-34 over the final three quarters, but the Lancers’ strong first quarter was too much for Doherty to overcome.
The Spartans have scored a season-low 36 points in two of their past three games.
The Classical Academy 56, Pueblo Centennial 28
At Pueblo Centennial: Jason Anderson (16 points) and William Ball (14 points) led TCA (3-2) to its third consecutive victory.
TCA allowed a season-low 28 points against the Bulldogs.
Girls’ Basketball
The Classical Academy 41, Pueblo Centennial 25
At TCA: TCA (5-0) remains undefeated following a strong performance against Pueblo Centennial (1-3).
CheyAnn Queener (12.2 PPG) led the Titans with a team-high 15 points and a season-high 10 steals. Queener has scored 15 or more points in three of TCA’s five games. Junior Hannah Carr recorded eight rebounds and five steals.
Mesa Ridge 55,
Valor Christian 42
At Heritage: Freshman Kylee Shook and junior Sami Rudd combined for 27 points as Mesa Ridge improved to 7-0 with a victory over Valor Christian (2-6) in the Heritage Memorial Hoopla. Shook (14 points) shot 55 percent from the field while grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three shots.
Rudd was just as influential scoring 13 points, blocking five shots and snagging six rebounds.
Pueblo S. 60, Doherty 30
At Pueblo South: Pueblo South (9-1) received 22 points from Shannon Patterson as the Colts won their seventh consecutive game.
Hockey
Valor Christian 6, Palmer 2
At Sertich: Josh Robinson made 44 saves for Palmer (0-5, 0-2 Peak Conference). Palmer’s Sam Horning and Austin Storm scored. Zach Donovan and RJ Haenze notched assists.
