THE GAZETTE

Boys’ Basketball

Falcon 61, Pueblo South 53

At Pueblo East: Falcon (7-1) used an 18-9 third-quarter run to overcome a 24-20 halftime deficit and defeat Pueblo South (3-5) in the Pueblo East Tournament.

“We struggled a little bit in the first half, basically offensively with turnovers,” Falcon coach Greg Cox said. “We had to put it together in the second half.”

Chances Matlock led the way with 20 points for the Falcons, who were without post player Daniel Synder (hip flexor).

“Chances Matlock had another big night for us,” Cox said.

Falcon’s Shaun Livecchi added 14 points and Nick Lenhard scored 10.

Fountain-Fort Carson 54, Kennedy 52

At Cherry Creek: Fountain-Fort Carson (6-3) snapped Kennedy’s four-game winning streak with a victory in nonconference action.

Senior Alex Coleman led Kennedy (5-4) with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Reginald Hammons had 13 of the Commanders’ 16 assists. No stats were reported for Fountain-Fort Carson.

Lincoln 50, Doherty 36

At Lincoln: Gabriel Vazquez was 6-of-9 from the field and connected on 9-of-10 free-throw attempts to score 21 points and propel Lincoln (4-3) to victory.

Not only was Vazquez a force on the offensive side of the ball, but the senior also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Doherty fell to 5-4 after falling behind 14-2 in the first quarter of this one. Lincoln only outscored the Spartans 36-34 over the final three quarters, but the Lancers’ strong first quarter was too much for Doherty to overcome.
